The FCC approved UWB for commercial usage in February 2002. UWB will provide new opportunities for unlicensed communications and radar operation over the next 5-10 years. IWT has been performing UWB studies and development since early 2002. They have won two Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase I contracts and recently won a SBIR Phase II contract associated with UWB communications. Jim will provide an overview of UWB technology, FCC regulation, and comparison to other commercial wireless standards.

Biographical Information:

Jim Silverstrim is a Senior Consultant Engineer at Innovative Wireless Technologies Inc. located in Forest, VA. He specializes in system requirements, analysis, and tradeoffs for wireless products. Jim is currently involved in several projects including smart wireless sensor networks, APCO Project 25 radio, Joint Tactical Radio System, cellular transmitter detector and GPS receiver. His experience includes land mobile radio, broadband cable IP network and cellular handset development at Ericsson Inc, and radar, communications and infrared systems at General Electric Aerospace. Jim has an MSEE from Syracuse University and BSEE from Penn State University.
