Speaker: Dr. Marc Horner, lead healthcare specialist at ANSYS Inc.
Subject: Computational Modeling and Simulation for the Biomedical Industry
Computational modeling continues to gain traction as a critical tool for biomedical product development. For this talk, computational modeling refers to engineering simulation software that can discretize and solve physical equations based on first principles, e.g. FEA and CFD tools. These tools help product developers understand and optimize product performance and improve robustness by identifying complex dependencies under real-world operating conditions. The result is shortened product development timelines and lower rates of product recall for the medical device industry. The increased number of device applications that include computational modeling has also led to formal FDA recognition of computational modeling as an essential component of a best-in-class product development strategy. This presentation will begin with an introduction to computational modeling tools and their application in the biomedical industry. The following cases studies will be discussed in more detail: stent deployment to abdominal aortic aneurysms, biocompatibility prediction of centrifugal blood pumps, and drug delivery to rabbit and human eyes. It will also include an update on the current regulatory position on computational modeling for medical device development and regulatory review.
Dr. Marc Horner is currently working as lead healthcare specialist at ANSYS Inc. Marc joined ANSYS after earning his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University in 2001. Marc began by providing support and professional services for biomedical clients, primarily in the areas of cardiovascular devices, drug delivery, packaging, microfluidics and orthopedics. During this time, Marc developed numerous modeling approaches that can be used to establish the efficacy and safety of medical devices. Marc now helps coordinate business and technology development for the health care sector in North America.
